About Bone Appetit Raw Food

You must be wondering what this "NEW FAD" diet is for your dog that everyone is talking about. Well, feeding your dog RAW is not new…kibble (dry dog food) is the new kid on the block. It has only been around since World War II. Prior to that, everyone fed their dogs table scraps, remnants from the garden and whatever else the family dog could scrounge up. During that time, cancer, thyroid, Cushing's disease, and arthritis were almost unheard of. During the past few years, with the demand of schedules and the desire for convenience in feeding the family pet, the popularity of kibble has grown. It doesn't matter that today's health problems of our dogs and cats, stem from inappropriate nutrition.

BONE APPETIT’s goal was to make the best RAW food on the market.  We do not use “human grade” leftover carcus and offal, we use the actual “human grade” meat protein cuts.  Our pork is “baby back loin ribs” our goat is USA goat “riblets”, we are proud of this fact that all of our meats proteins are the same that you buy for your family.  While some RAW dog food suppliers do grind various scrape meat and offal (guts) and sell for dog food, it certainly has some great benefits, but feeding this on a continuing basis can lead to some malnutrition.

BONE APPETIT encourages you to talk to your local butcher about these products to help defer costs, but you have to remember that the dog must have a good variety of meat proteins and other nutrition from vegetables, fish, and offal proteins (heart) to keep its immune system healthier, resulting in fewer health issues.

Among those who feed their dogs good protein still feel it is important to cook any food.  Even though this is healthier than feeding kibble, they are still cooking out the nutrients and enzymes that help your pet stay healthy.

Comments like; "My pet will get e-coli, or even "chicken bone splinters" are not true.  Cooked chicken bones (any cooked bones) are very dangerous to your pet. The chemical structure of the bone changes when cooked, making them dangerous to swallow and digest.  Raw bones are not only satisfying to your pet, but very nutritious.

You can get e-coli and salmonella from kibble, and freeze dried food, because they are using inferior meats.  This is dangerous to you more than your dog.  Most dog food recalls are because of E-coli bacteria, because it is hazardous to you and your family, not your dog.

Most kibbles have at least 4 salts and all synthetic nutrition, because they have to cook it to such high temperatures to kill the bacteria in the meat sources for the safety of people handling it.  Dogs and cats have a different digestive system than humans, which is why they can eat that dead animal and not die from it.  Grains and diced up vegetables are not conducive or nutritious to a pet's digestive system.

BONE APPETIT started making raw dog food in 2002 because we saw a need to feed good nutrition in our service dog program.  We had issues with our dog’s breath, infected ears, skin, attitude and all around health.  We couldn’t take a dog into a restaurant and have them smell of “yeast” or “stinky dog”.  It was BONE APPETIT’S goal to make our dogs and your pets the healthiest they could be through nutrition. Even though there are other factors to consider, nutrition is one of the most important. We have seen greatly enhancing changes in behavior, chronic skin conditions, and energy, just by changing to raw food.

BONE APPETIT is very proud of the fact that we are the only raw dog food that is truly raw!  Our product is not freeze-dried or dehydrated.  You do not have to add anything to make it more nutritious, or edible. This is a complete nutritionally balanced meal, therefore, you open, weigh/measure the suggested amount for your dog and feed.  With our balanced nutrition you will see that you will feed LESS of our food.

                                                     OUR MEATS

All of Bone Appetit’s chicken, turkey, pork, beef, duck, goat and lamb products are USDA inspected, human grade, hormone and antibiotic free. We use no stressed meat, 4D meat, meat byproducts, or crude proteins. Our motto: IF WE CAN'T EAT IT, WE WON'T FEED IT.

We utilize only chicken backs with rib cage as this the best meat to bone ratio, then we grind it to a course consistency.

We only use US hormone free Turkey necks.  Necks are a natural source of glucosamine, chondroitin and L-Tryptophan.  They are less fat and easy on the digestive system.  They are also great for getting that excess weight off.

The lamb and beef is ground with an 80/20 meat to fat ratio.  The Pork is US pork loin ribs, and the duck is US premium duck, while our goat is USA or range free from Austrailia.  We don’t have rabbit, only because costs prohibit us from making an affordable produce and we will not use China rabbit.

The offal (organ meats) that we use is also USDA human grade. We use beef heart and beef/pork kidney. These products are very important to your pet's diet. The heart offers a different kind of meat protein and the kidney is beneficial for digestion and help detoxify.

The fish that we use in our products are the four main bait fish; mackerel, herring, anchovies or sardines. These bait fish are caught right off the Oregon Coast and we get them right off the bait boats in Charleston Harbor.  These bait fish offer the proper nutrients, vitamins and omega 3 and omega 6 that are required for a healthy immune system.

We also add Organic alfalfa, Icelandic organic kelp and raw apple cider vinegar to aid your pet in their digestion, skin and coat.

It is important to feed your pets a variety of meats, because each meat offers a different source of meat proteins. Our most popular product is the Bone Appetit Meal Deal Combo Case. (See our product line)  We selected these items to guarantee that your dog will receive a variety of food, but also the variety of nutrients to keep his immune system healthy.  You can change the combo case to fit your dog, but we suggest the combo to guarantee that you include all the meat proteins.

Bone Appetit ships only on the West Coast. If you would like to know if we can ship to your area please contact us.  We ship our product in 1 lb. or 2 lb. tubes. Call if you have a special ordering requirement. We ship only full (24 lb.) boxes of food.  Please see our Distributors List for availability in your area.

OUR VEGETABLES

Bone Appetit only uses the finest ORGANIC vegetables and fruits available. We purchase all our vegetables from the Organic Growers.  How we process these, is that they are only mixed with the natural juices of the vegetables and fruits that we use.

With the nutrition goals met through our fruits and veggies, we do not have to add any supplements. The generally called "Green Foods", that Bone Appetit uses, include alfalfa, wheat grass, and dandelions. These are excellent sources of beta-carotene, minerals, amino acids, fiber and enzymes. They also contain beneficial antioxidants. Alfalfa is commonly recommended for arthritis and joint problems, because it has high in vitamin K content and is highly nutritious.

Bone Appetit does not use any underground veggies. These are high in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are sugar, and sugar feeds yeast and cancer, they are said to be a large contributor to joint swelling and stiffness.

We do use an underground herb, which is Burdock Root. Burdock Root is the traditional herb for the treatment of chronic skin problems. It is also considered a blood purifier and liver stimulator.

You will see no grains in any of Bone Appetit Meal Deal Products.  We have based our product on the digestive system of the wolf. You never see a wolf out in the wheat field eating the tops off the grains, but you do see them eat the vegetative stomach content of a fresh kill. This is in a pre-digestive state that is very nutritious. This is why we use a process that pulverizes the vegetables to a pre-digestive state, using the vegetable's own juices.  In order for your dog to get the valuable nutrients and vitamins from vegetables, they must be pulverized.  If you want to make your own veggies, put them through a food processor, blender or best will be a juicer.  Just chopping your vegetables are great fun treats for your dog, but they are getting no real nutrition because they are unable to break down the walls of the vegetable to redeem the most nutrition.

Raw Food Questions

What is BARF or Raw Food Diet?

BARF or Biological Appropriate Raw Food is the natural way your dog should eat.  A dogs digestion tract is designed to eat a raw diet.

Why should I feed a Raw Food Diet?

Because your goal is to have a healthy happy dog.  When you have a nutritionally balanced diet, you have a strong immune system.  When your dog’s immune system is healthy, stinky dog odor goes away, bad breath, farts all disappear, no smelly ears; they will have cleaner teeth, less skin allergies and even less fleas.  In some cases, good nutrition even helps with behavior.

What does it cost to feed my dog a raw diet?

At Bone Appetit we want to make your life easy and your dog’s life healthy.  With our complete Meal Deal, you will feed a 65 pound dog approximately 1 pound per day and we sell it for $3.25 pound.  Most information about raw food diets use the guide line of 2 to 3% of your dog’s ideal weight.  So a 65 pound dog would eat almost 2 pounds of food a day.  This is a combination of foods, one day meaty bones, next day vegetables and offal, etc.  Not the most appropriate way to get balanced nutrition.  We have a lot of different suggestions to help keep the costs down.

Why should I feed Bone Appetit’s Meal Deal?

When feeding a raw food diet, the most important thing is to make sure that your dog is receiving the most balanced meal, and making sure that his diet has the right combination of calcium, minerals, omegas and vitamins.  Here at Bone Appetit our Meal Deal is complete, because we use chicken backs with ribs attached, one of the best sources of meat to bone ratio, and with the bone you are getting the proper and most natural source of calcium, we cover all vitamins through our vegetables (nothing underground so no carbs) offal (gut meat) which is always overlooked in a raw diet, we use kidney and heart. We cover omega 3 and 6’s through our bait fish.  Our organic alfalfa and kelp cover the needed minerals and we use organic apple cider vinegar for some nutrients, but mainly for skin and digestion.

How do I receive my Bone Appetit raw food?

We ship our food frozen, double boxed and insulated with newspaper.  This is the reason we are limited to a four day delivery time.  If you are unsure about our delivery to your address please contact us.

I received my Bone Appetit raw food and it was slightly thawed, what do I do?  If you received your shipment of food and the ends are thawed, but the food is still cool to the touch, place in freezer immediately.  It will be fine to feed your dog.  The food is very fresh, we grind in a pre-frozen state and then the food is frozen in a sub-zero environment.

Will my dog get e-coli or salmonella?

Your dog cannot get e-coli or salmonella.  It can get salmon poisoning.  Your dog’s intestinal tract is short so e-coli cannot grow in it like humans.  That is why your dog can eat a dead animal after a couple of days and not die, it will probably get sick and vomit, only because it gorged itself.

How do I feed Bone Appetit Meal Deal?

After you have decided on your amount to feed, thaw a tube in the refrigerator (DO NOT MICROWAVE BONE APPETIT RAW FOOD.  IT CONTAINS BONE AND MICROWAVING IT CAN PARTIALLY COOK THE BONES AND THAT CAN BE HARMFUL TO YOUR DOG).  Weigh out your amount for your dog and feed.  Feed raw food in a stainless bowl, crock, or glass bowl.  NO PLASTIC - IT IS POROUS AND WILL BECOME CONTAMINATED.  REMEMBER:  You are feeding with raw meat so take all the precautions that you would when feeding your family.  Clean all counters and dishes thoroughly.

When I thawed by Bone Appetit Meal Deal is bloody, why?

You are dealing with raw meat, so keep it in the refrigerator in a container so it doesn’t contaminate your other food, and treat it like other raw meat.  If there is blood present DO NOT drain off, give this to your dog, this is very nutritious.

What’s wrong with chicken breast/thighs?

Breasts and thighs have to high of a meat to bone ratio so your protein is really off.  If you want to get something at the store, watch for wings or necks as long as they are hormone free.

What additives do I have to add to Bone Appetit’s raw food?

None, we made it so you don’t have to worry about adding oils, vitamins or any other additives for a balance diet.

Can I mix dry dog food with Raw?

Bone Appetit’s suggests that you do NOT mix the two together.  They have different processing times.  It takes approximately 12 hours to digest kibble with lots of water intake to swell the food then break down to be digested.  Whereas, a raw diet only takes about 4 hours.  This process helps with young puppies learning potty issues and older dogs with incontinence issues.  If you feel you still want to feed kibble, feed the dry in the morning and your raw at night (beware though, most dogs stop eating the dry)

Why doesn’t my dog drink lots of water?

When feeding a raw diet your dog does not have to break down grains and fillers.  The meat and veggies have a natural source of moisture so they do not need the water amount to digest food.  You will see a decrease in water intake by a third on a raw diet.

Why doesn’t my dog poop huge piles?

On a balanced raw diet your dog will not have to eliminate as much or as often as it does on kibble.  The poo piles are much smaller and they don’t have the order as the kibble fed dogs does.

Why is my dog’s poo white sometimes and dry?

This is a digestion process and the white is the excess bone that is being eliminated.  If your dog is showing signs of dry poo, just drizzle some cold pressed olive oil on the food.  This helps with digestion and skin.

I feed my dog twice a day and sometimes he won’t eat the second meal, why?  Believe it or not, it usually indicates that he is not hungry!  He is nutritionally content.

What changes will I see in my dog on a raw diet?

When a dog goes on a raw diet from kibble it will go through a process called “detox”.  This can be very minor in some cases and in other it can be extreme.  Dogs detox just like us.  We sometimes call it the “flu”, but sometimes it’s just our bodies throwing off toxins.  Sometimes you will see vomiting, loose stools, discharge from eyes, smellier ears and itching.  These are normal “detox” issues and they can be addressed.  If your dog is continually vomiting,  and has continuing diarrhea, you need to seek professional help, but if you see some days that he has mucous in the poo, vomit small amounts of mucous, these are signs of detox.  Help him through these, with great natural and homeopathic remedies.  We have several suggestions, please contact us for suggestions.  This is a hard thing to remember, but if your dog is healthy, it will go through detox.  You want this; it means that your dog is on the road to a healthier immune system and nutritionally sound body and mind.  You will see big changes in your dog, more energy, less smell, cleaner teeth and shinier coat.
